In 2015, Steve attended the Nelson and Pade Master Class. This started the intense interest in this form of agriculture.
Fast forward to 2016. Steve and Tammie meet and begin dating. A few months into their relationship, they began discussing how they each had wanted to own their own business, and brainstormed ideas they could possibly do together. One night, Steve showed Tammie the information from the Nelson and Pade. Tammie immediately fell in love with the idea of Aquaponics and said, “This is what we’re going to do!!”. From that moment, the ball started rolling. They introduced the idea of a family owned business to Tammie’s dad, Tim Watkins, who supplied the land for the project. He agreed to be part owner in the business. They also spoke with Tammie’s son, Tyler McKenty, who had just graduated from college, about being the greenhouse Operations Manager. He was onboard as well. Steve, Tammie, Tim and Tyler attended the Nelson and Pade Master Class together in January of 2017.
In November 2016, the business name was decided, West KY Aquaponics and the LLC was formed. Work began on a business plan with great support from the Murray State Small Business Development Center. By the fall of 2017, the business loan was approved, and the ground was broken and prepared for an 8,000 square foot state-of-the art bio-secure greenhouse. Construction on the greenhouse began in January 2018 and was completed in April.
